Listening to Color by Donovan Freeland

Listening to Color was inspired by rock and roll music, an abstract original that Donovan Freeland saw in Paris and Neil Harbison. Freeland met Harbison, a British-born avant-garde artist, at an International Color Marketing conference several years ago. Born color blind, Harbison pioneered the transposition of light waves into sound frequencies, creating an implant that allows him to hear the symphony of color. In tribute, Freeland crafted Listening to Color as a rock and roll concert for the senses. (Wall hanging approx. 31 ½ X 23”)

Local Batesville hobby-artist Donovan Freeland (sometimes known as Gheppeto) took up “hooking” as a creative outlet during his career in color merchandising that spanned four decades. Patterned and solid colors of specialty-dyed wool sourced from his textile colorist and mentor are cut into varying pasta-like shapes and hooked into one-of-a-kind artwork. Though sometimes designed for use as an accent rug or table runner, most of Freeland’s pieces are back-framed or full framed for wall art.

Freeland collaborated with David Walsman to create the custom frame for Listening to Color, which includes locally harvested barn-wood inlay. His inspired creations are displayed in places as far away as Sweden and Hawaii. Freeland won’t admit just how many hours he put into this significant piece but as he has yet to do art for commission, this is a rare opportunity to obtain one of his prized and storied pieces.
